Refuge From The Storm

“Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me, for my soul trusteth in thee, yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” Psalms 57 vs 1.

The Lord woke me up this morning with this song ‘Til The Storm Passes By – by Gaither Vocal Band: –

In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face
While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place
‘Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry
Keep me safe till the storm passes by. 

Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand
Keep me safe till the storm passes by

Many times Satan whispered, “There is no need to try
For there’s no end of sorrow, there’s no hope by and by”
But I know Thou art with me, and tomorrow I’ll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies……..

When David wrote Psalms 57, he was being chased by Saul. Saul was not looking for him to have a friendly chat, but he was pursuing him to take his life. David needed refuge and even though he found temporary refuge within the cave where he hid from Saul, he knew better, he knew that God was his ultimate refuge, he knew that the only place where he would be completely protected was in God’s presence.

Today many people feel as if they are being chased by the enemy or they feel as if there is no way out. They are overtaken by fear and confusion to the point of having suicidal thoughts. But there is a place to hide when there is trouble. There is a secret place where the enemy cannot find us (Psalms 91 vs 1: Psalms 27 vs 5).  And it is open and available to all who are willing to receive it.  The word of God in Psalms 32 vs 7 says “Thou art my hiding place, thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.” The word compass means to circle around something or to go around something in a circular course. That’s what God’s hiding place does, it covers you from every angle leaving no room or opportunity for the enemy to breach. There will come a time when each of us will have to seek refuge in God. It will not be a time to panic or fear, but it will require faith even faith as small as a mustard seed and that’s all you will need, because that’s the kind of faith that Jesus say will move mountains and that’s the same kind of faith that gives you impossible results (Matthew 17 vs 20).

I remember when hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica in 1988. My sisters and I had never witnessed a real hurricane before, so we were very much excited and anxious to see what this storm was all about. We were all outside watching the trees swaying back and forth in the wind and screaming on top of our voices calling Gilbert to come! But soon after, the wind became very boisterous and took off our neighbor’s fairly new roof top which flew away like paper, and it was at that point we realized that this was going to be a dangerous storm.

It left us no choice but to take refuge in a shop across the street. Big shop as we usually called it was the temporary place that was set up for us to go in case, we needed refuge from the hurricane. We watched from inside as the storm destroyed everything in its path and today, we are still thankful to God that the big shop was strong enough to keep us safe until the hurricane passed.

The big shop experience reminds me of God’s refuge, but the difference is, refuge in God is permanent, it is a place with unlimited supply of strength and provision. A place where we are safe not only from physical storms but spiritual storms too. A place where every battle is won, and we can watch safely from a distance as our enemies flee. He is our safe house, our refuge and our shadow from the heat (Isaiah 25 vs 4). Take refuge in him today.

Let us pray:  Lord I repent of my sins today. Thank you for your word. Thank you that in you there is a place of refuge for me and my family. You have proven to be my rock and my fortress according to your word in Psalms 18. I give you all the glory today in Jesus name. Amen. Until next time. God bless you.
