Christian Soldiers

“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangled himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” 2nd Timothy 2 vs 3-4.

Hymn of meditation today is Onward Christian Soldiers by Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900). That’s the song the Lord laid in my spirit when he woke me up this morning. You are free to sing along.

Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus Going on before. Onward then, ye people Join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices, In our triumph song.  Christ the royal master, leads against the foe
Forward into battle see his banners go….

Ephesians chapter 6 verse 11 says “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” We are in warfare and if it wasn’t clear before, there is no doubt that this is a spiritual warfare, the same one described in Ephesians 6 vs 12. But how do we prepare for battle as believers? How do we arm ourselves? My two boys are currently serving in the United States Navy and you will never see them on duty in civilian clothes. All soldiers must show up for duty in proper attire. Even the new recruits at bootcamp are not allowed to wear civilian clothing. As a matter of fact, all personal clothing is sent back to their relatives upon their arrival at bootcamp!

It’s no different for you and me. The moment we gave our lives to Jesus we become new recruits in the Kingdom of God. The Bible calls us newborn babies in Christ (1st Peter 2 vs 2). As new recruits we must be fed with the word of God and we must be clothed in our spiritual attire. We are given the word of God which is our spiritual food and we are adorned in new garments as described in Ephesians chapter 6, which says “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. (verse 14-18).

Self-evaluation is necessary in the life of all believers to ensure that nothing hinders us from being armed and ready for spiritual warfare daily. I encourage you today to make sure that you are properly clothed and filled up with the word of God, so you are not overcome by negative predictions and fear. You were chosen to be a soldier in the army of God stay armed.

Let us pray:  Lord I repent of my sins today. I thank you for your word. Help me to feed on your word daily so I can stand during times of peril and distress. Help me not to be distracted or to become overwhelmed with the affairs of this world in Jesus name. Amen. Until next time. God bless you.
