“For the sake of My name I delay My wrath, and for My praise I restrain it for you, in order not to cut you off.” Isaiah 48:9.
When God repented that he had made man in Genesis chapter 6, his plan was to wipe us off the face of the earth. We would have become extinct, us and the animals. But though he was upset and angry at man’s disobedience, he was still searching for a reason not to completely destroy us. Today I am thankful that he found a reason to spare mankind, and that reason was found in Noah. The Bible says that Noah found grace in God’s sight (Genesis 6:8). Because of Noah God spared humanity.
Then there was Abraham in Genesis chapter 18 (reading form verse 17). The Bible said, “And the Lord said, shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do. Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” Like Noah, Abraham found grace and favor in the sight of God and because of that, God did not want to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah without telling Abraham. He knew that Abraham would have interceded on their behalf and he (God) would have spared that city even for one. Abraham tried to find even ten in that city for God to spare it, but he came up short (Genesis 18:32).
Noah’s family was spared, because he found grace in God’s sight and Abraham’s family was spared (Lot his nephew and his two daughters) for the same reason. The Bible said God remembered Abraham and send Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt (Genesis 19:27-29). Noah and Abraham loved God and they also taught their children to love and obeyed God. They were the one reason for God to stay his hand. Years later God would have sent his son Jesus Christ to be “the one” once and for all. The one who we can call on to save us from God’s wrath, the one who is making intercession for us so that we will not be utterly destroyed, and the one who we can rely on. But we still have a part to play. We must make it our duty to pray for our communities, our families, and our friends. And we must live our lives in such a way that we will find favor in God’s eyes. When we have his favor, we will be spared from his wrath.
Let us pray: Lord please forgive me of my sins today. Thank you for your word. Please help me to find favor in your eyes so that you can use me for your glory and for your mercy to be extended to my family in Jesus name. Amen. Until next time. God bless you.
