“And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father, and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.” Genesis 9:22-23.
My opening scripture is taken from Genesis chapter 9 focusing on verses 22 & 23. So, after the flood Noah and his children were given a mandate by God to replenish the earth. The Bible says that Noah became a husbandman (someone who cultivates/farmer) and part of his cultivation he decided to plant a vineyard. Naturally, he and his family would have enjoyed the fruits of their labor, but one day Noah had a little too much to drink and was drunken (Genesis 9:21).
Noah was so intoxicated that he could not even cover himself in his tent. He just laid there naked with no resistance. It is a true reflection of the sinful nature of man. Because of sin in our lives we have become vulnerable and subject to shame and disgrace (Proverbs 14:34). In this case, Noah’s other sons Shem and Japheth came and covered their father’s shame. The scripture says they went backward to avoid seeing their father’s nakedness (Gen. 9:23). That was also a true reflection of love towards their father. But just like Noah, we cannot help ourselves out of our sinful state. We need God. It is only God’s love that’s demonstrated through Jesus Christ that is strong enough to cover our multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Glory be to God!
The story of Noah reflected what was to come. It was an indication of what God intended on doing for us. The big difference is, Jesus could not have walked backwards to redeem us, but he had to take on our sins head on. Our sins were all over Jesus, so much that his Father turned his face from him, while he was on the cross (Matt 27:46). The blood of Jesus must never be taken lightly. It is our coverage when we sin, it is our coverage when we are sick, and it is our rite of passage to heaven. Today I am so excited for the comprehensive coverage that I have in Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord, my sins are covered!
Sing with me. Jesus Paid It all by Newsboys.
I hear the savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness, watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all
Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow……..
Let us pray: Lord please forgive me of my sins today. Thank you for your word. Lord I am so thankful for your love that will always cover my sins. As I live day to day help me to always confess my sins before you, so that I can be pardoned and covered in Jesus name. Amen. Until next time. God bless you.
