“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking.” 1 Peter 2:1
Further reading in 1 Peter 2 verse 16 says we should not use our liberty as a cloak of maliciousness but as servants of God. Many of us have some seriously bad habits, we go to bed with them and we wake up with the same attitude. We have tried to get rid of it, but nothing seems to work. Yet, you can still feel your conscience tugging you to get rid of those habits. But what you believe to be your conscience is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit knows that those habits will hinder your blessings and can cause your faith walk to be clogged up and eventually abort your spiritual maturity or growth.
Some of our bad habits are exactly what is described in my opening scripture. Malice, envy, speaking evil of others, anger, hypocrisy and so forth. Are you guilty of any? If your answer is yes, then it is time to deal with this issue. These are tools that the enemy use against so that he can choke our spiritual and our physical relationships. No matter how you try to fake it, if you are a born-again believer and you are practicing any malicious behavior you will become burdened by it.
The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1 that we should lay aside the weight that so easily beset us. One definition for beset can a persistent problem or difficulty. Bad habits fit that description, they weigh you down and rob you of your peace and tranquility if you allow it. I completely understand that it feels so much better and so much easier to yield to the flesh, but I dare you to fight back. Do not allow any ill feelings to take root in your heart. Confess it to God, be honest about your bad habits and allow the Holy Spirt to take care of it. In due time you will be healed. Once you are healed begin to practice good habits (both spiritual and physical) so that no root of evil will overcome you in the future. It is an ongoing warfare, but you are already victorious in Christ.
So, go ahead, shake those bad habits off and rid yourself of the weight. There is a lighter yoke that is way much easier to carry (Matthew 11:28-30).
Let us pray: Lord please forgive me of my sins today. Thank you for your word. Please help me to confess my faults and my bad habits before you so that I can be healed in Jesus name. Amen. Until next time. God bless you.
