Be Fruitful Even In Captivity

“Thus saith the Lord of host, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon. Build ye houses, and dwell in them, and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters, that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.” Jeremiah 29:4-6

The children of Israel were taken captive by king Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon. They were there for many years.  And like anyone who are held against their will, the children of Israel were devastated, they wanted to go back home to their own land, so they did nothing productive during those years, only waiting on the day when God would deliver them.

But God did not see it that way. He sent a message to them, that they should increase in the land wherein they were made captive. He told them to seek the peace of the city meaning to pray for it and he will give them peace right there in the city of Babylon (Jeremiah 29:7).

God does not waste anything or any opportunity and though his people whom he allowed to become captives in a strange land, he did not want them to waste anymore years being unproductive. When you belong to God, you can prosper anywhere you are placed, whether you got there by choice or by force, if God is with you, then you can prosper. But you cannot sit with your hands folded and your mind closed. You must continue to seek ways to make yourself useful even during the hardest of times.

Where in Babylon are you today? Are you in a Babylon of sin and shame? Loneliness, frustration, and depression?  Or maybe you are feeling tired and isolated? Whatever your Babylon is, take heart, remember what God told the Israelites to do while in captivity. Start planting your garden, plant fruits, build a house and make plans for your future because God is getting ready to show up on your behalf. You can prosper right where you are even if your circumstances seem like prison walls. Please remember that no Babylon can keep God away from you, no Babylon can stop his right hand from finding you.  Let today be the start of a new era in your life. Today is your day to get up and get going!!!

Let us pray.   Lord, please forgive me of my sins today. Thank you for your word. Please help me to never sit with my hands folded, no matter what my circumstances may be. Help me to always seek out and find a way to increase and to always be productive, in the name of Jesus. Amen. Until next time. God bless you all.
